Sparta - Austere - CD (2002)

Labels: Dreamworks
Review by: Martin Brown

And so the touted new ‘alternative’ darlings offer their first package since having their ex At the Drive In heinees snapped up by Dreamworks in a crocodile-snapping-at-that-mad-Australian-wildlife-guy style-ee. I’d previously heard their song off the Buddyhead comp, ‘The Host’, a keyboard-laden post rock masterpiece, and thus when the first song of this, ‘Mye’, a fucking lame ass At the Drive In rip off seeped sewage-like and noxious from my speakers, I was prepared to call the 911 and get the DIY-punk-scene-police on those aforementioned heinees. Indeed, this is a pretty disappointing package, 3/4 of it being not that good. ‘Vacant Skies’ is a pretty empty song, and the ‘de-mix’ of some song is entertaining enough but gets plain silly towards the end. However, the CD’s saving grace is track 2, ‘Cataract’, an absolutely brilliant track incorporating lots of post rock vibe and some angsty, albeit quiet and soothing keyboard instrumentation. Thus, in summary: patchier than Tracy Emin’s sheets, but some amazing stuff could come from these guys. Admire them from afar, cos close up they’re right dogs sometimes.
