Martyrdöd live were some pretty decent d-beat coupled with a fair dollop of drunken buffoonery. Here they sound a lot more focused and a lot more sober, but one question: where the hell are the vocals? Buried somewhere ‘neath the hustle and bustle of their loud, dirty hardcore for sure, but when the music is as powerful as this you really want everything up there and bashing away rather than half the gang hanging back and egging the others on like sissies. True, things start to gel a few listens down the line, but it’s still somewhat frustrating when what you want is an immediate boot up the arse.
“Sunday Morning Einsteins came to kick your behind,” apparently. What a polite way of announcing their intentions – they didn’t even feel the need to swear. They cough up two grubby-eared d-beaters that stomp around like they bloody own the place. S’good enough, but they only really hit their stride on the second track where the benefits of a little more fire in their belly and some vastly superior riffing shine through.
It’s a solid enough 7″ for sure, but something of a minor triumph considering both bands seem to be coasting along rather than really setting out to split some skulls.
