Superchunk - the Majestic - CD (1999)

Labels: Merge
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Oo, oo, Superchunk, Superchunk! I’ve only got one album, but I was dead surprised to see this 7″ lying around in a record shop. So much so that I didn’t balk at the £4 pricetag for only 2 tracks. Call me a spanner, but Superchunk are worth that kind of fee.

Right, first of those two songs is “Majestic”. Sounds more upbeat than most of the stuff off of that only album I have, “Indoor Living”. Driving, melodic, cheery sounding indie with equal doses of cool pop and rock. Come to think of it, this song is awesome! One of the bestest things I have heard in ages. I don’t really know who Superchunk sound like, but this track sounds like the bestest indie you’ll get to hear. Ah, just take all the great poppiness you’ll find in your favourite emo bands, and put that in your double decker pop rock sandwich and eat it. Yummity yum.

Backed with…

“Reg”. Starts off all jangly and cute. Yikes, Superchunk are giving off a huge similarity towards the Promise Ring at times here. Wasn’t quite expecting that. It’s the high pitched jangling that makes me think that, and it sounds just so super good and right. Anyway, this is another fine a song as you’ll find. And it’s only a b-side.

Everything about this release is perfect. I love the picture of the strange creature who is drawn on the cover. It rocks.

SINGLE OF 1999 SO FAR. GO BUY THIS, EVEN IF IT DOES COST YA FOUR BLOODY QUID FOR TWO TRACKS. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE ALBUM. stoopid capslock key.
