The Double - Loose Crochet - CD (2003)

Labels: 54 40 Or Fight! Records
Review by: Mike Whelan

A duo from Brooklyn this, serving up a morose dose of pseudo-blues meets rootsy country rock, and riding on the wave created by art-rock.

Not that I’m not a fan of this type of music. I loved The Double’s labelmates, 31 Knots, last EP, a CD which sounded
broadly similar to this one, it’s just that The Double suffer from being a little bit too laid back. The CD reminded me
first of all of American Football and Joan of Arc, but while these bands had something about them, The Double struggle to
hold my interest for much more than the length of a song. The tracks tend to meander all over the place without ever
actually ending up anywhere, it sounds, like my mum would probably say, just like noise.

If you like bands like Cat Power, or Joan of Arc, or the Owls, then The Double will have something you want to hear. But
for most people who just don’t get this type of thing, then every track will jut sound the same, with the same acoustic
guitar/drum combination and the same quiet vocals sung in the same southern drawl.

I’ve given The Double plenty of time to grow on me with five or six listens, but it’s never going to take root. Best left
to fans of the genre.
