The End of the Century Party - Isn't it Perfectly Fucking Delightful - LP (1999)

Labels: Belladonna
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Phew. I was a bit worried about this record a day or two after I sent off the cheque. I suddenly remembered I didn’t much like the two songs I had heard by them. Oops, not the best logic to buy a record on, but hey. But all that worry was pointless, because this album is a blast! Most of the time it is absolutely raging and chaotic thrashy hardcore, with screamed vocals that often get the raaaa on. I’d give it some serious Swing Kids comparisons at those points, but they tend to have a few more ‘mellow’ (ha ha) moments… although, actually, there are occasions when this band gets a little more dischordant and quirky, reminding me of Native Nod, particularly on “With Breakfast In The Morning”. I think that’s a little odd, but I swear it’s true! And “Everything Stops” too, when the vocals get really desperate and the whole thing almost displays some melodic tendencies.

The songs are generally really short, very fast, and the album as a whole can’t be much longer than 15 minutes. I haven’t timed it. The best song title is: “the only reason you say you’re a vampire is because werewolves and frankenstein don’t get laid”. Lyrics are really cool, there are a load of big inserts (mainly flyers from various shows) and they thanks 12 Hour Turn. Rock.

In conclusion: I think this is one of the best records I’ve heard this year. Result.
