The Grey AM - Move The Monuments East - CD (1999)

Labels: Fiddler
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I can run off a whole shedload of bands that the Grey A.M. share similarities with, so I will. Braid, the Get Up Kids, Mid Carson July, the Jazz June (those last 2 being not too much of a coincidence, this is Pennsylvania emo rock, baby!), and for one closer to home, Spy versus Spy. If you like any two of those bands, you’ll like the Grey A.M. and it really is as simple as that.

And yeah, they really do sound like all those bands. The vocals are sometimes wavering, completely similar (is that bad English or what?) to Mid Carson July. Sometimes they are whiny and high pitched, like the Get Up Kids. They often like to rock, like all of them. They have enchanting slow bits, like most of them. And they have dynamic and bouncy rhythms, like, erm, all of them. Yet they just about bring something new to the table, not quite sure where, but they do. For me, the coolest thing that the Grey A.M. do is when they slow it all down and get a bit minimal, in the middle of songs and suchlike. It keeps you guessing and keeps you interested.

Another band contributing to the emo overkill? Or some guys with some rather decent music to offer? Yeah, both. And you’ll probably dig ’em for it.
