Hey, this six-track, 30 minute long mini album be rather good – a nice development on from the other 2 JJ songs I have. I also got this by accident, I had ordered the new Jejune album, and got sent this instead. But I couldn’t be bothered to send it back, they cost the same, and I decided this was cool anyway after playing it.
The Jazz June have four guitarists. Yay! Don’t know if many other emo rock bands have 4 guitarists, and this lot make it work by playing all those nifty melodies and stuff all at the same time, thus creating some wonderfully complex and powerful, yet at the same time fragile, songs. The vocalist has also changed his style. Previously a little overbearing, maybe his voice has worn out a bit as it sounds a little cracked and much more strained.
Opening song “When The Drums Kick In” sounds like one of those fast paced Get Up Kids songs. Fast and punky pop rock. I wonder if they were a little lacking in song material though, as the lyrics appear to be about the rush of playing in a band. Whatever, this is a great track. 5 minutes long, but generally pretty relentless, the guitars never ease off. The other songs keep it up with the power. Occasionally they bring in a gentler, Promise Ring-esque feel, and at other times they remind of Cap’n Jazz (re: “Bullets In The Backpocket”), but maybe I’m just making silly assumptions from the band name. There is a really rocking instrumental called “Intro”, which could have been awesome with some words. And final track “This Statue Falls” is like 8 minutes long! Too much happens with this one to describe. Suffice to say, it’s rather groovy.
On the verge of being amongst my faves of the emo rock genre. Nice one Jazz June.
