Now this here 7″ is some super nice music. It’s on the same label that put out the first Mates of State album, so maybe they make a habit of putting out nice stuff. The ridiculously complex packaging is a bit nice too. Jim Yoshii Pile Up steals the show by making super-sad Sunny Day Real Estate style emo / indie, I really haven’t heard this sort of music made as well as this for years. For absolutely years. The vocals are not too ‘in your face’, the instrumentation flourishes, builds up, swirls around and is exceedingly atmospheric. I am thisclose to putting them in the bracket that says “almost as good as Christie Front Drive”. Heck, let’s stick this song in that bracket. This is gorgeous. I like how under-stated it is, and how the guitar is played just how I want this kind of emo guitar to be played. Stand out. I just got an album by these guys too, I will be overjoyed if it contains 3 or 4 songs as good as this. Wow.
On any other record Wussom*Powl would be stars of the show themselves. They are playing some very brittle indie pop with quiet girl vocals. It’s quite slow paced and it drifts along in a very downbeat mode, but also has a build up to a stage where the drums and guitar sound start to almost flood out of the speakers instead of trickle. I guess it is kind of Sarge-ish, but then, not quite the same. It’s certainly not irksomely ‘cutesy’ like a lot of that girl fronted indie pop is. Which kind of makes it stand out.
Really spot on record, which is cool as I just bought this on a whim. Yay for whims.
