The Juliana Theory - Understand This Is A Dream - CD (1999)

Labels: Tooth and Nail
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Hmm, the guy on the cover looks like one of the members of Comic Book Heroes.

Right, where were we? Ah yes, the Juliana Theory. This is much more like it from Tooth & Nail. Solid, emo driven indie rock, Deep Elm probably would put a song by them on an Emo Diaries comp if they asked nicely. Sort of Texas Is The Reason styled guitars, but toned down a little to allow college radio play. There’s a fair mix of fast and slower stuff, sometimes in the same song. All highly unoriginal, but songs like “Seven Forty Seven” are pretty cool.

Unfortunately, they are a bizarre concept band. Get this: a group of scientists are trying to prove a theory, and needed a band to test it out for them. This band is the Juliana Theory. The band have to play the music and prove the theory to the world, but, and here is the big one, they are restricted from giving away the theory itself. Woah, deep. And unfeasibly stupid. Probably religious too, after all, there are guys called Jeremiah and Joshua in the band.

Without the ‘theory’ shit, they are your basic US indie rock band that play their guitars far nicer than your basic UK indie rock band. With it, they just make themselves look stupid.
