The K Word - s/t - CD (2003)

Review by: Tom Sloan

The K Word play interesting mathy indie-rock, with a poppy bounciness and liveliness, which works well on this little 4 tracker. In fact, at times it’s downright scintillating stuff. Standing out an absolute mile is track four, “˜bleep bleep’, which is a lengthly and rocking song complete with mathy build ups and breakdowns done very, very well. They even get a little funky towards the end, a style that makes sense when held up to the sharp and sassy vocals, and weird sample type things that pop-up between songs. Although this may sound horrible, The K Word pull it off with a certain panache to match their originality. Instrumental track 2 is also in the realms of good-ness, with tense layered guitars and wandering bass lines. However, this review is in sort of reverse order, for the simple fact that opener “˜Market 8′ doesn’t quite do it for me. I’m not sure exactly what it is, except for maybe the fact that for some irrational reason Brandon Boyd and Incubus keep popping into my head when I hear the vocals and the riff. Nasty.
It isn’t however, enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of the c.d. Refreshing, I think, is the word.
