The Lies - Underdogs & Infidels - LP (2000)

Labels: Kill Rock Stars
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I got this around Xmas last year. Courtesy of my favourite record store. First time around listening, I hated it. I despised it and swore to never listen to it ever again. Today out of sheer boredom, I removed it from the ‘unwanted listening’ stack and gave it a spin. I loved it. I blame the cancerous heat of Australia.

Thirteen tracks that fit together very nicely like an abstract jigsaw puzzle. Taking in weird forms and shapes. Some tracks are mellow, combining cello and piano while others go in a totally opposite direction. Mixing up keyboards with rockin’ guitars. Dale Shaw’s vocals daunting like dark clouds. And there’s the 2nd track, ‘Jump Ship’, which is really sweet and melodic that’s got me unconsciously humming along. Sometimes they remind me of The VSS. New-wave-ish. That kind of thing. Not amazingly good but different.

Yeah I like it. I blame the heat.
