Something I am particularly enjoying about the UK scene at present is that there is some really varied stuff coming out. The Machines really establish themselves with this 2 tracker. The first song, “I Thought About A Romantic Meal for Two…” is a great blend of melodic indie/emo and power-driving melodic hardcore. Throw in the gruff vocals and they’re going to get a bunch of comparisons to Small Brown Bike I betcha. I love the urgency and pace, but unfortunately I lose interest as they break down into a lengthy twinkly instrumental second half of the song that eventually just peters out into feedback.
The other side is an absolute fucking belter though, the vocals are just superb – really reminds me of Spencer from the Shivering. The music is a rollercoaster ride of fiddly Spy vs Spy style parts that explode into great uplifting rockouts and yelling. These guys sound like they are having a huge amount of fun playing, and its equally ace to listen to. Such a powerful and killer song. Love it.
Don’t like the packaging though. It comes in a 7″ mailer, which is too big to sit in my 7″ boxes. Oh well. Music makes up for it!
