If you find yourself missing Elliott or Mineral or even the Gloria Record (like me), then you really should pick up this here CD. What we have here are 8 wonderfully structured and executed tracks of indie rock, with a little bit of an emo edge. Really poignant and powerful music that is done so well; the quiet bits are equally as moving as the loud shouty bits where the singer is singing at the top of his voice from the bottom of his lungs, you know he means it. It feels like the type of record that could have been put out on Deep Elm when that label was starting to get going rather than Engineer Records last year and I have a soft spot for that sound which may be why I like this record so much. It’s ex members of Penfold too I think if that floats your boat.
There is a nice mix of quiet, understated bits (see the title track and ‘A Terrible Secret’) and more shouty, strained bits, much like ‘False Cathedrals’. In fact, the general sound of the album is pretty much similar to that record, it does at times have that echoey, empty feel that was so prominent to that album. Unfortunately this band have now split up but as a goodbye this album is more than satisfying – also check out their website for lots of mp3s of songs that didn’t make it to record. Thumbs up!
