Melodic indie music that sounds like a pub band with aspirations. Like maybe they’ve just stopped playing Coldplay covers and have switched them for Franz Ferdinand numbers, thinking that listening to “Marquee Moon’ and stealing a couple of Richard Lloyd’s licks will make them the next immaculately-coiffured overnight sensation. Yawn. The music is so dull it barely exists, while the singer sounds so bored with his own material that it’s a wonder he can muster the enthusiasm to mumble out his trite little rhymes. The loathsome promo sheet that came with this had the gall to tell me that in a world where so many bands sound the same, the New Shapes are a truly original band. Which of course begs the question that if that’s the case, WHY THE FUCK DO YOU SOUND SO MUCH LIKE THE STROKES?
