I found it bizarre to see this on Output records until I listened too it. The Rapture are a great fucking band. The Mirror lp was fantastic and the cd on sub pop was awesome as well. It showed a real progression in the band. This goes even further.
They Really take a Lot of influence from PiL, from all across PiL’s spectrum, the vocals the space-y parts, the vocals, the dub influence.the only difference is that PiL were trying to create something new and that the Rapture aren’t! That doesn’t make them a bad band one bit though. They are in fact better than a lot of Public Image Limited’s recordings. I think they also take a lot from The Cure, and also at times I’m reminded of The Slits a bit. Some people I work with said it’s a lot like ESG as well but I’m unfamiliar with them. I’m told I shouldn’t be. Listening to this really makes me wanna see ’em live!
The main track is a total dance fest. Screamed vocals over dubby breaks, funky bass and a totally great drumbeat-heaven! You can almost see the carnage that would take place if they played at the Social. Then theres a remix of the title track by Morgan Geist. This is great as well. An element of A Certain Ratio in there on this one. The drums sound a lot more like dance beats than rock drums. This version has a trumpet on it as well, its all very acid jazz! This track is good though! I promise! The third track sees ’em doing a bit of gospel yeah yeah! Still sounds more like PiL than the Make Up though.
This is a really good 12″. I would really advise you get this!
