The Republic of Freedom Fighters - s/t - LP (1996)

Labels: Linkwork – Mountain
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is two or three years old, but I’m figuring I’ll review it as I’ve never seen this band mentioned anywhere else before. Anywhere. Which is a shame as some people will find this something utterly special, particularly if you share my tastes in what makes emo, well, *emo*. I just can’t stop playing it.

There are only six songs on this 12″ LP, but it plays at 33rpm, and it flows incredibly, almost like two long tracks. Flows is a good word to use I guess, one minute the sound is subdued and light, the next, a driving tidal wave of ferocious power and emotion sweep over you. By times intricate and repetitious, the vocals are spoken, sung with an air of desperation, or are blasted out in good old screamo style. It takes influence from old school emo bands like Indian Summer and Native Nod, particularly in the way dynamics are observed, and will surely appeal to anyone who falls around to Yaphet Kotto or 12 Hour Turn. If it means anything to anyone, there are ex-members of a band called Breakwater here.

Definitely put this record up there with other bands who have put out classic records in this style, you need this album if you find yourself jumping about the room in an involuntarily erratic way to your other emo records.
