I’m always stoked for a new Shivering record, they have been so consistently good so far and they keep getting better with each record. Now they just need to put out another full length so that I don’t have to keep flipping this over and playing it several times in a row because there are only four songs on it and it’s simply not long enough!
If you are not familiar with the Shivering, then they play a great melodic style of emo, with passionate, unrestrained vocals that compliment the music superbly. First track, “Concept of Place” is mid-paced and has a fantastic, grooving part that repeats over and over then ascends into a noisier rock out. Very fine. Then there is “Forged” which is much shorter and faster, blowing by in what must only be 2 minutes or so. I love the drums on this track which really shuffle the whole thing along at quite a rapid pace. The third track is “With Disconnection” which is mid-paced again and has a chunky style that is reminiscent of Still Life, I love the mellowed out parts where it breaks down, it sounds so nice. I think this is my favourite track on here. Finally we have “to the Ground” which when I heard it on mp3 sounded completely different to anything else this band had done and quite surprised me, but now hearing it on this 10″ it fits in really well with the other tracks on here. It’s a little different and more off kilter at times, with some quirky guitar parts mixed up with their usual style. Good stuff. The spoken bit on this track is very Current. It has a great ending too.
The Shivering will probably end up as one of those bands that a few people are into whilst they are around, then a few years after they split, people will be all over their stuff. Either that, or in 25 years time me and Deller will be moping around on e-mail writing things like “why on earth did everyone ignore the Shivering?”. Class.
Three labels released this: Council, Owsla and ino the hurricane
