The Sound of Failure - Distress Signal - 7

Labels: When Humans Attack
Review by: Alex Deller

Fact: I am writing this review when I should be working on an essay, purely because some nearby knobwit is playing some of the worst sub-Shaggy reggae music in the world and it interferes with the post-rock noodlings which I use as homework music.

The Sound of Failure play an energetic splatter of music, herky-jerk emotional hardcore that’s not afraid to chug-out at the same time as throwing an emo kid hissy fit. Music is thick and groove-infused, sometimes chuggy, sometimes almost moshy, reminiscent of such obscure acts as Carol, Enfold, Order of Importance or Linsay, but also throwing in spazzy shards of discord into the fray in true San Diego style. Vocals are snotty yells and screams, reminding me of bands like the Swing Kids or Song of Zarathustra with their petulant yammerings and tight-trousered rants “” “œDamn you mom! You sewed the Struggle patch on my jeans upside down! Squeal!”, stuff like that.

So despite my flippant remarks this is a pretty good 7″ record from the same label that brought you the An Albatross lp.
