This Is Not An Exit are a local band (to Nottingham) and although they’ve played about a bit Ive never got round to seeing them. From knowing Mark through mutual friends I was handed this demo at the last liars club. Of course, when I found it in my pocket the next day I had no idea where I had got it and who they were!! After a bit of head scratching I remembered how I got it. I played it and was pretty surprised. The band are pretty interesting, the first track is the more post-rock of the three and mutates between lo-fi Mogwai-isms and almost Don Cab moments. It goes on a bit and I’ve been finding my finger looming over the skip button a bit but its pretty good. The other two tracks are a lot heavier and are almost Botch-like at times with their intricate time changes and metallic riffs (one of the riffs in track two almost sounds like the depressing metal of the mighty Massacre!). The time changes are not typical Botch-esque time changes though, they kind of reminded me of a band like Hella (although this band do not sound like Hella at all). After checking this demo out I’m gonna check em out next time they play and see what they’re like live!
