Here you have a fine example of what is now called extremo (according to the NME at least. little does the NME realise that the spoof emo band Emo Summer coined the term years ago – link : andy m). The name Extremo sounds amazing, I was thinking maybe take the brutality of lo-fi black metal and mix it with the true emo stylings of someone like Saetia? But it seems that extremo is actually melodic emo with a much slicker edge but some bigger riffs with a pinch of hardcore thrown in. The Thursday song is pretty good, I hated their lp but this track is really catchy and I can definitely see some mosh action happening if they played this track at rock city (which I’m sure they already are!).
The Thrice song is very average though, I had heard they were a lot more punk sounding and I wasn’t exactly expecting Detestation but to me they really don’t sound very punk at all. Not that that’s such a bad thing but they are pretty middle of the road, especially after the Thursday track.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Thursday track but it’s a good song and there’s not much more you can ask for in a single!
