Labels: Them’s Good
Review by: Andy Malcolm
If you ever need reminding of the super solid aura of goodness that the band Travis Cut emit, then go see them live. I bet you one pound that Mac won’t smile for the entire set, but you’ll get 30 minutes plus of great songs. On record, well, the last album is something special, but outside of that I’ve not been totally blown away. Luckily their song here is up to the standard of that record, and it’d fit nicely. Catchy, rocking, poppy and melodic punk with addictive choruses and toe tapping drumming. Neat “Ohhhhhhhhoh” backups too. Plus bang on production. And an emo part. Heh. Sort of. It’s good. If you like Travis Cut, you’ll not be angry with this release in the slightest.
On the otherside is Otherwise. Otherside Otherwise. Do you see? I don’t. My god! Is this the same band? Man a fucking live! They have to write more songs like this! Thanks to Paul Abjure for pointing me in the right direction here, but they are starting to sound a bit like Lifetime. And on this song they sound, get this, like Lifetime mixed with Braid!!! No way! It’s true. Ok, so it’s not quite as good as that comparison would suggest, that would be practically impossible, but it’s pretty close dammit! It’s only 2 minutes long, which is spot on. And it features lots of fast, melodic punk mixed up with slow, jangly emo parts that build up into some distinctly un-pop-punk-like weird time changes, and then they fly off at a hundred miles an hour again. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I love this song and I am so happy! This band used to be straight forward Fat Wreck stuff, good at it, but not my cup of tea. But now, oh wow. Practically perfect.
Get this for Otherwise 1st, Travis Cut 2nd. That surprised me.
