Twinkie - Twinkie - CD (2005)

Labels: Avebury
Review by: Gareth L

I bet Sonic Youth get mentioned in every review this band receives. So I apologise for mentioning their name again. But really, it’s hard not to compare the two bands. Twinkie play lo-fi slightly grungy indie rock and play it in very fine manner indeed. I get a lot of review stuff that I don’t really expect too much from but this album really blew me away, I’d never heard of them before and it’s always refreshing when surprised with an unknown band.

So there are 14 tracks and a live track and there are not really many poor songs. The guitars squelch and squeal, stop and start, and it is great for me at least when songs don’t go where you think they will. Twinkie don’t have verse-chorus-verses as such despite having often quite simple song structures, and often bits of the track don’t quite fit together, or sound weird, but it’s just great. The male/female vocals work together perfectly especially when they’re both singing at the same time. The more I listen to this album the better it gets – if you like really dischordant, unpredictable and slightly quirky Sonic Youth-esque indie rock, or even if you don’t, check Twinkie out.
