Umlaut - demo - CDR (2005)

Pretty fun little 3 track demo we have here, from some chaps oop north who have heard a few

fiddly twinkly indie-emo records in their time I am sure. They open up with the excellent

“First Song” which is upbeat and bouncy in the time honoured fashion of 30 Degrees

Everywhere era Promise Ring. You basically get your guitars that go twinkle twinkle buzz

buzz, simple drums that carry the rhythm and a nice warm bass sound that gives it all a bit

more oomf. And it comes across as hella catchy and well judged – this is definitely good for a demo, though needs a little tightening up overall, if only because its pretty pointless to be in a sloppy band when you’re going to get compared to Braid or Cap’n Jazz! The vocals aren’t quite so typical of the genre, employing a very distinct English accent that are probably a little prominent in the mix for my taste, but they are pretty solid – almost talky at times without ranging around that much. Not really sold on a lyric which appears to be “and that twat gave you a call” either, dudes need to study their Davey and Bob lyrics a bit more and work in the naive innocence that this sound is familiar for! Things are rounded off with “Winter Coat” (that’s more like it!) which is probably my least favourite of the three tracks, dispensing with the charm and energy of their apparent mid-west emo obsession and presenting us with a very straight up indie song that doesn’t really click with me. Oh well. There is a bit of keyboard too, which is a no-no for me, keyboard smacks of when the Get Up Kids decided to go bad after Four Minute Mile. Anyways, the other two songs are very good, hopefully they’ll go on to do more stuff in the more emo vein in the future. Worth checking out if you like this kinda thing.
