Uncrush - Was Ever Being So Born To Calamity? - 7

Labels: Crank
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Here comes another Crank label band, and they have 2 of the best song titles of the year. First up, “The Moron The Merrier”. Cool! On to the matters of the music. Woah, their singer sounds a bit sad. And the noise the band are making hardly is inciting me to be the happiest person in the world. Starting off all slow and drifting, it suddenly picks up for a noisy, messy, rocking section. This is probably the angry bit. Gotta feel for that singer though. I think the song actually physically blows up at the end, with the band spontaneously combusting in a fit of misery. Crumbs, I have to listen to it again now just to make sure I got all that right. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just sooooooo depressing! I’m gonna go lie on the floor by the speakers now to see what he’s singing about. If I don’t come back, you’ll know I’ve decided to end it. I survived. As much as I can make out, it’s hate the world day. I could have done with this song a few days ago.

On the flipside we have “There’s A Roof In The Leak”. I don’t think Uncrush are about to get any happier on us, do you? More of the same emo-guitar fiddling around, with noisier bits. Once this one gets going, it fairly rocks a long. Downbeatly. But they have some pace about them this time. Singerboy has given up crying for some hoarse shoutiness, a bit Crockettsy in a way. Actually, this one really does rock! Better than the A side.

I bet Uncrush are one of those emo bands I read about where the crowd that turns up just stands there watching, and then crying. When everything sucks, intentionally make it seem worse and put on this record.
