Various - A Room Full Of Tuneful - CD (2002)

Labels: Melodic
Review by: Ian Cavell

Possibly the best sampler CD I’ve ever bought – this is a chance to check out some of the fine sounds from the Melodic label (plus friends) and unlike the majority of ambient/electronica compilations, this one is sensibly priced. I can honestly say that there is not one track that has me scrabbling for the remote so as to alleviate unnecessary auditory torture – and bearing in mind that this is electronica – a genre equally as likely to send you drifting off into some reverie with a sublime, soothing track as it is to annoy you with a 10 minute endurance test where you spend the first few minutes wondering if you have the record playing at the right speed and the rest of the time wondering if you have inadvertently scratched the record until you realise, no, this is the right speed and, unfortunately, this is how its meant to sound. The stand out tracks on here are Tex La Homa (reminding me vaguely of Her Space Holiday but even better), Minotaur Shock, Pedro and Chessie – put the other tracks contrast nicely and will no doubt give you more than a couple of names to look out for the next time you go record shopping. Some amazing tracks – I think this is pretty much essential.
