Labels: GSL
Review by: Chris Bress
So GSL are in on the cheap sampler cd’s now are they! This was only four
quid and its totally worth it.
Beautiful Skin: really good new wave / dark wave pop from ex Rorschach
members. This is one of the best tracks off their LP.
Convocation Of: The first track off the remix 12″. It doesn’t sound too
different from the album version apart from some added keyboards and vocal
delay. It’s a wicked track though. I think the Convocation of are one of the
best bands on GSL and the most recent LP is fucking amazing.
De Facto: Surprisingly good track from this ex At The Drive In band. Mixing
up dub and world music they do a good song and it makes me want to check out
their other releases.
Dead and Gone: Their a great band, this track is the first track off their
most recent double 7″. This release didn’t hit me quite as heard as either
of their two lp’s or the Creeps On Candy LP but it’s a good song anyway.
Gogogo Airheart: They lay down a pretty good post punk track, not their best
but a good track nonetheless.
Heart Of Snow: The first track on the 12″. Its good but its such Siouxsie
worship its crazy.
I Am Spoonbender: Pretty good track from this poppy space age synth band.
Le Shok: Great band and a great track off their LP. Snotty keyboard punk
rock.
The Locust: Aliens with keyboards. Insects with keyboards. Robots with
keyboards.
Lost Kids: Another good surprise, I hadn’t checked out their cd because Luke
said they were shit but the track on this is really good. Poppy garage rock,
kind of like a much better version of the Strokes meets the Dirtbombs? I’m
gonna get their 12″ when I see it next.
Mohinder: Seems weird to have this track on the comp but it doesn’t stand
out too much. This band is amazing, fast as fuck emo thrash.
Outhud: I love this band and this tracks great, dubby post punk like a cross
between Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire or something. This is from
their split 12″ with !!!.
The Pattern: the a-side to their 7″ on GSL, its ok, nothing too special.
Garage punk kinda stuff.
Pleasure Forever: This track made me want to listen to the cd again; I was
so disappointed when I got their cd as I was well into the Slaves. I must
have not been paying enough attention cause this track is great! It’s the
first track off their album.
The Rapture: The a-side to their 7″, it’s a good track but not one of their
best at all.
The Starlight Desperation: I was pleasantly surprised by this track too,
eerie rock with a really dark feel.
Subpoena The Past: Bit of a disappointing band if you ask me. The idea of
the dude from Angel Hair playing dark wave industrial post punk sounded
great to me but I haven’t really got too much out of any of their releases,
this track included.
Sunshine: I find this band to be pretty hit or miss. This track is a bit of
a hit for them. Check it out!
The Vss: This is the best track on the GSL singles cd. “I cut my teeth” is
amazing angular hardcore, it makes me wanna throw myself around the room
just listening to it. Why didn’t I go and see them when they played? Because
I’m a twat.
Vue: pretty good rock track from these Rolling Stones wanna bees. I’m pretty
sure this is from the first 7″ (when they were called the Audience).
XBXRX & Quintron: My first XBXRX experience, and they sound pretty good.
Keyboardy garage rock but with a slight Trumans Water feel at times. Might
check out some more of their shit.
!!!: I love this band and this track is great. It’s off their brilliant LP.
Get the album if you like this track as it isn’t the best one off the lp at
all.
Overall this comp is good, it’s well worth the price. I think they could
have spent a bit more time on the artwork though, its fucking shite!
