Various - Back To Donut - CD (1999)

Labels: No Idea Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

33 songs. 77 minutes. The only compilation that could be better would
be a Jade Tree sampler. That’s how good this is. And the bands are in
alphabetical order on the CD. Cool eh?

  • Anklebiter – melodic punk rock, with emo overtones and some
hardcore influences. Bit of Clairmel in there, bit of Texas Is The
    Reason, bit of themselves

  • Anthem 88 – shouty hardcore with metal influences. goes fast, and
    slower

  • Bomf! – stoopid drunk punks sounding a bit like Dropkick Murphys
and harping on about the merits of drinking and driving. ha ha! whatever

  • Clairmel – an unreleased track from the mighty ‘mel, although it’s
not quite as impressive as anything on their album. off-key, cracked
vocals power their crunchy emo-punk-rock with added hardcore
    influences. good stuff though

  • Coalesce – hoarse & grunty, heavyheavy hardcore. fuckin’ scary, but
    very boring

  • Combatwoundedveteran – utterly insane noise which lasts 24 seconds.
a bloke screams and i go and hide under the bed

  • Elmer – tedious country influenced punk that thinks its funny.
    *yawn*

  • Fay Wray – responsible for my most played album of the moment, this
unreleased track probably would have fitted on that pretty well – a
slice of melodic and catchy punk rock with what sounds like a guy
‘playing grass’ half way through. really! Fay Wray – fun, punk, and
write fast songs that last 2 minutes. check them oot

  • Grade – one of the more interesting bands here. one minute its
grunted, heavy hardcore, and the next it all breaks down for some
classy, sung melodic sections more in the style of, say, Clairmel.
wouldn’t mind investigating these lot further

  • Hankshaw – poppy, radio friendly, catchy, indie rock.
incomprehensible singer probably a boy, but does good impression of a
girl. nice song, should be huge, probably won’t be

  • Hot Water Music – live version of “Alachua”. HWM rock. enough said
  • I Hate Myself – emoey indie. whiny vocals but gets shouty at the
end. my pointers for the rest of the time though are to Silver Scooter
    and Beezewax

  • Jud Jud – err… ok, 2 blokes making songs just by using words like
“na na na na” and “jud jud” – utterly silly, but fun i guess

  • Left for Dead – hotrod quick hardcore, i quite like it when it’s
done like this. cool shouty vocals and backups

  • Less than Jake – though you’d never know it was them. covering a
Slayer song called “Antichrist”. if i knew the original, i’d get the
    joke

  • Lexingtons – snotty punk rock. unremarkable
  • Mercury Program – hard to describe this one. mainly spoken, it is
rumbling but still has a tune. maybe a bit like the Schema song on the
dismal Diaries 3. Makes me think of Cable at times

  • Moonraker – Similar to Mercury Program. More spoken stuff (though
much more monotone than Chris Leo), but perhaps more jangly. breaks out
into sporadic bursts of Clairmel style punk. i like this a lot

  • One Eye Open – i am sure they are doing a cover version, but this
is crap so i won’t elaborate

  • Panthro UK United 13 – one of my fave bands of the moment, if you
like their album be sure to also get the earlier 7″. anyway, PUKU13 do
hardcore influenced punk rock with melodicism and added HWM influences.
if anyone knows for sure if they share a band member, can you let me
know? all i have to prove my suspicion is a picture of a guy with a
beard in PUKU who looks rather like a guy with a beard on the
HWM/Clairmel split 8.5″. ta! oh, and this song rocks, probably more so
than most of the album tracks. be into this band

  • Pung – fast punk rock, with yelled vocals. pretty cool
  • Radon – neato, melodic punk with strange whiny vocals and a kinda
either dated or lo-fi feel. exceedingly catchy, and a cool song title –
    “Facial Disobedience”

  • Retard Beaters – lo-fi punk, recorded in a cupboard. a kid shouts
words fast. this is pretty good somehow

  • Reversal of Man – take a look at the name. hardcore perchance? good
guess. aggressive and heavy with frantic screamed vocals

  • Rumbleseat – oh look, members of HWM got fed up being in only 98
other bands, so one of them decided to do this acoustic version of HWM.
    and it fuckin’ rules. man

  • Schlong – ska with other bits to make it a lot more interesting
than regular ska. and they don’t do punk either. should be annoying,
but i defy you not to smile when listening

  • Small Brown Bike – hardcore, but not easily definable hardcore.
slightly emoey, occasionally crazy, occasionally like HWM. vocals are
    excellent. another hit

  • Spoke – quality. tough to pigeon hole, like it could be anywhere
between punky indie rock and hardcore, cos it’s very melodic, yet fast
and slightly aggressive too. i dunno. what i do know is that its
    brilliant

  • Strikeforce Diablo – hey look, an HC band with a sense of humour –
song called “Judy Garland’s Christmas Special”. which makes me think,
do you think we’ll ever hear a comedy emo band? dunno how that’d work.
anyways, SFD are specialising in a heavy brand of ‘core which doesn’t
go much faster than mid-paced. not bad for this kinda thing

  • Swarm – shouty heavy hardcore. big deal
  • Tomorrow – utter class. shouty emotional hardcore which has much in
common with labelmates Clairmel and HWM. No Idea must have the patent
on releasing this style of music, cos all their bands that do it rule
    the world

  • Twelve Hour Turn – crunchy, heavy hardcore. better than most of
that style on this CD, as they have melodic and more creative bits like
    Grade. singer sounds desperate. decent

  • Usuals – slow ska with girl singer. actually sounds ok after all
that hardcore. i guess it is this CDs equivalent of them ‘chill out’
rooms for all those people dumb enough to go to speed garage clubs or
    whatever

As Homer Simpson said, “Is there anything a donut can’t do?”. Although
you’ll never like all the songs, even the dodgier ones sit well amidst
    the greatness. Just buy this.
