Three tracks on this little miniaturised cd from bands what comes from Italy. Oh, I
have no idea if that is the actual title, but I am going to use it anyway. Sprinzi are
a band I first heard earlier this year, and I was pretty impressed by their CD of
Braid style indie rock, but this takes things in a different direction. “Forthcoming”
is an atmospheric and wandering song with repetitious guitars burying floaty
electronic sounds in the background, making me think of that excellent Antarctica cdep
in a way. The vocals are tops, they are loud let have a fragile feel to them. The song
is lengthy and does a great job of building up then easing off again. I love the warm
guitar sound and the way the electronics are hidden just behind everything but
contribute a whole lot to the sound. Special! This is just the sort of music I want
to hear at the moment, and I hope I get to hear the next record these guys do as I bet it will be great.
To the Ansaphone are up next and I distroed their 7″ but forgot to keep a copy for
myself. They go for an 80’s approach with keyboards and effects, the first 40 seconds
or so are seriously reminding me of something probably Duran Duran, ha. After that it
turns into something a bit darker, but remains an instrumental. It was OK, but not
what I was expecting to hear.
Redwormsfarm (?) are last and they kick things off with crunchy guitars that made we
expect either a band that was going to sound like they were from DC. This turned out
to be the case. Seems to be mainly bass and drums with shouty singing too. It is
fairly arty / mathy. They have an organ which they throw in at one point when they
shout. I think these guys would go down well with a lot of folks who enjoy the dancier
end of the rock spectrum, as they have a groovy sound. Reminded me a bit of Robocop
Kraus, for a European reference.
Neat little cd (literally), and I was especially excited by the Sprinzi song. This is
a nice way to check out some bands you may not be familiar with. Right, I am going to
listen to that Sprinzi song again.
