Various - GSL & Three One G SXSW Showcase - 7

Labels: GSL
Review by: Chris Bress

This highly limited picture disc 7″ single was for people who attended the South By Southwest GSL and Three One G showcase out in Emo’s, Austin, Texas recently. Some Girls, Year Future, 400 Blows and Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower all feature. First up are the rocking Some Girls, a band I really didn’t want to like for some reason but their cut rocks it. They play fast, chaotic hardcore that was like Das Oath if they relied on more rock riffs. Its an awesome track and it made me want to track down the LP. Year Future feature one of my favourite hardcore singers ever, Sonny from the creamtastic Angel Hair. The 4 track 12″ was pretty great hardcore punk with the ever present goth tinges that lie in most of his work. The track on here features some brilliant drumming (I think its the same chap who was in Talk Is Poison and The Pattern) and some excellent Siousxie / Sisters Of Mercy guitar work (much like the Song Of Zarathustra 10″). 400 Blows sound like Feeder doing Born Against covers, so naturally when they play fast like Born Against they are ok, but when they bust out the Feeder style rock sections they suck in the worst possible way. Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower are new to me, and are, like Some Girls, a band I didn’t really want to hear. Here though PTBUTET start off with “œland of hope and glory” and end up sounding like pre-!!! Group the Yah Mos but less fun. Nevertheless their track on here is till fairly enjoyable and a trip to Derby to see them may be in order.
