Various - Household Name Records - A Punkrock-Hardcore-Skacore Compilation - CD (2002)

Labels: Household Name
Review by: Tom Sloan

Having reviewed a Noo Noo Records sampler of a similar nature to this the other week, I can safely say this pisses all over most of the bands efforts on that comp,- not that that’s in any way unsurprising given the reliable nature of the stuff that appears on the Household Names label.

I’m not sure that this little sampler can be bought, but either way it serves as a good indication of whats fresh on their roster at the mo. The highlights include of course Capdown, in typically excellent form with the opening track from their ‘Pound For Sound’ album, ‘Faith No More’. It seems everyone seems to like Capdown at the moment, even people who I know don’t like ska seem to have taken a shine to them of late, which has to be deserved due to the quality and sheer quantity of shows they seem to play.

Also a pleasant surprise was the track from Big D and the Kids Table whose snotty vocalist make this track ridiculously infectious, and Lightyear who along with Jesse James and Capdown seem to be flying the flag for uk ska with their melodic bouncy tunes. Luckily, this comp doesn’t over-do on the ska front, and there are thankfully some punk and hardcore minus-brass efforts. The Take and Captain Everything are the pick of the bunch, with simple and fun punk-pop. Not much on the second half of the cd impresses as much as the first batch of bands, but Red Lights Flash are impressive with some edgy punk rock, and Adequate 7 catch the eye with their ‘brass-driven funk core’, or whatever that is. Anywho their debut album out in February will probably be worth checking out if I’m not sick to death of the sound of trumpets by then.
