Labels: Snuffy Smile
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Have you ever seen anything so cute? It’s one of those tiny little CD’s, but even better, it comes in a small yellow envelope. Aww man!
4 bands on this release, Eversor, Three Minute Movie, Lovemen, and Braid, fresh fresh from a tour together in Japan.
Eversor are the kings of Italian emo. Well, I presume they are, I haven’t heard any others. “Stark” is a nice taster of poppy emo rock, with your usual round of Texas Is The etcetera influences. Maybe a bit of Samiam too. Dawsons Creek / Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack potential.
Next up is Three Minute Movie, who deal you a song that you would instantly say was on Snuffy Smile even if you had no inkling as to that fact. It sounds like Wall. You haven’t heard Wall? Get immersed in the Snuffy Smile scene this minute! Oh go on then, this song sounds like Texas Is The Braid. Dynamic rocky emo stuffage. Check out the awesome song title: “Fish Don’t Think They Swim”.
I have the last 2 songs, but seeing as they rule so much I won’t complain. Lovemen contribute “For Life…” which appeared on a split 7″ with the ‘Tone over here. I love this song, though it sounds a little subdued on CD. Eh? Maybe it’s a different recording. Lovemen have no luck with CDs it seems (just compare the song “Voices” from the “Children Eat A Nightmare” CD to the version on the split with Hooton 3 Car which has a picture of Bronko Nagurski on, yay!). Anyways, this song has a bouncy riff that the Promise Ring probably laid down but forgot to ever use. Then it has a nice rocky, up lifting chorus. Punky emo pop, this band are (as a man at the petrol station described a brand of car polish to my sister) “the nuts”. And I haven’t seen a better live performance since back when.
Braid do “First Day Back”. I have this 3 times don’t you know. One of my favourite songs of 1998, the best song I have ever seen performed live, and damn, I wish they never broke up. Pure emo pop that makes me dance.
Great little release, doubly so if you don’t have the track by Lovemen, but if you don’t have that Braid song, then you deserve shooting.
