White Circle Crime Club - These Are The Secret Sounds Of Fear - CD (2003)

Labels: Conspiracy Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Ouch. I rather nattily sliced up my thumb with the scissors whilst attempting to excavate this CD from it’s packaging. It better be bloody (*chortle*) good after all that.

White Circle Crime Club are from Belgium, and you will be relieved to hear that they are not vegan metallers. Instead they trek through 4 melodic rock tunes that do just enough to make you pay attention instead of clicking the skip buttons. Their sound is a relatively straight forward one, but the solid song writing shines through. They almost remind me of old Belgian band Reiziger with the dark mood that they create, although the vocals are mostly different – WCCC opt for an urgent singing style, and occasionally shout. They do go with the shouty monotone on “The Perfect” though. I am also led to think of bands like Burning Airlines and stuff like that – seemingly straight forward rock music but with a neat twist. I particularly liked “Aufbau” which builds up really well over it’s time, with the guitar ascending to the finale rather nicely.

Well, I am not sure it was worth almost removing my thumb to hear this record, but apart from that it ain’t bad at all. If well played and energetic rock music is your bag, then you could want to check these guys out.
