Wolves - Transistor Transistor - split - CD (2004)

Labels: Level Plane
Review by: Alex Deller

Two bands that shared many stages across Europe not so long ago now share a split recording together. Bless.

The Transistors are up first, and though I seem to have a stack of releases by them this is the first to have made any real dent in my head. Hurtling, crisply played punk rock songs with raspy vocals,
jangly guitars and some nice skittering drum patterns. Punchy, energetic and well played with lyrics that seem to be well-worded nothing much. Fits in well with bands like the Fiction, Light The Fuse And Run et al, but you already knew that.

Wolves kick in with four of their own, and musically they’re almost identical to their buddies (maybe travelling in the same vans and sleeping on the same floors does that to bands?), only possessing a slightly muddier guitar tone and some hoarser vocals. However, whilst T2 have made some of their best music to date, this lot aren’t kicking quite as much ass with this set of songs. Sure, moments hark at being special “” there are some snappy guitar parts and great melodic breakdowns “” but ultimately the progression is a sideways one rather than a running jump for a higher plateau.
