I am possibly the least qualified person in the world to review this record, but here I am, fucking it up big time. I really like it, but I haven’t a bleedin’ clue what kind of music this is. I mean, there are many moments on this record where it sounds like a bunch of drug addled 14 year old kids have broken into the school music room and are just goofing off with whatever instrument they have found lying around. A parp on the recorder for a bit in one song, a ting of the triangle here and there, a fuckabout with this weird sounding instrument that I don’t know the name of. Yet all the while they are “constructing” these mostly instrumental wandering soundtracks that are rather unsettling and eerie, using the unusual (to me at least) mix of instrumental noises, clattering sounds and hypnotic electronic drones. I should clarify that this isn’t mere noise, where some genius has recorded the sound made when lighting his own farts, but there is definite actual real music going on here, as unusual as it may be. Forget the fact that it is rather random and mostly there is infrequent singing, and at times you you could find it as the soundtrack to a particularly disturbing, yet very subtle, black and white horror movie that has virtually no words in it. The vocals on the second track are male and female, and really add to the rhythmical nature, it also has a very basic drum sound – it makes feels like the lament of a death but I have no idea what it is actually about as I haven’t tried listening to the words properly yet. The rest of the record is vocally sparse, barring the whacked out vibrating vocals on the final track.
So there you go. Take a hit from the bong labelled ‘pretension’, sit back, relax and enjoy this utterly compelling yet totally bizarre record. I like it a lot, perhaps because I haven’t heard anything like this before. Or more likely because I am a fucking hippy. Anyway, WWVV have a couple of LPs coming out on Troubleman this year apparently. Handy.
PS – some dude(s) from Meneguar is in this band. Really.
