Labels: life in a box – perpetual motion machine
Review by: Andy Malcolm
The elephant on the cover of this record is so cool. So cool in fact that I wouldn’t be
fussed if the music was rubbish or not, just because of the elephant. Luckily, the music on the first side
doesn’t let ol’ elephant down. Wow, Owls! slip us two tracks of their thumping, melodic
hardcore giving us a danceable groove and emphatic vocals. Its not at all unlike a slowed
down Light the Fuse and Run, or something along those lines at least. Its rocking, its good
choons, and gets the thumbs up from my hand right here. Not a massive departure from the
album, but that is no bad thing. “Cole Hutchison: 1982-2012” is the pick of the two songs, I think this was on their tape (I’ve definitely heard it before), its a slower, thicker song that reminds me of Yaphet Kotto in places. Good stuff! I hope to catch thee Owls live next year as that, I suspect, is where they really will shine brightest.
The Setup are responsible for side two, and they are not a band I am really that familiar with, turns out they play throaty vocalled metal. It sounds decent enough but I can’t stand this kind of thing personally. Never mind, there is always the elephant.
