Strawhouses - demo - CDR (2007)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Seeing as Collective was offline in the reviews sense for over 18 months, it surprised me that we still got unsolicited reviews offerings. Some of these were from dreadful promo companies plying me with sickening indie and myspacemo, and the occasional one was from a band that was actually not too bad. Such as this. So I apologise to Strawhouses that their review didn’t get posted until today, but we got there in the end. This is is a two track demo of solid indie rock, it’s nothing out of the ordinary, but the first track builds up pleasantly from an almost folky beginning into a soaring Radiohead type effort. I particularly liked the nice twinkly bits although I wasn’t sold on the vocal style. They keep that Radiohead vocal thing going on the second track, which otherwise has a nice repetitious nature to the guitars. It sort of reminds me musically of highly obscure and long forgotten late 90s indie pop bands such as Sterling Silver and the Warren Commission in a way, apart from the vocals. Nice, light indie rock with emo tinges in the guitars. I definitely preferred this track, and the only thing really stopping me from enjoying this song whole-heartedly is the vocals, which are too theatrical and “up front”” for my tastes.”
