Melquiades - We Are What We Ate - CD (2007)

Labels: Inchworm
Review by: Andy Malcolm

If I had told you 18 months ago that in 2007 we would see a release on Inchworm Records featuring members of Policy of 3 and Spirit Assembly you probably would have wept like you were at a Frail show back in the day, then punched me in the face as it dawned on you that I was talking bullshit and anyway, you don’t listen to that crybaby emo shit any more. The likelihood was surely minimal. But it’s happened, oh yes, it has happened. And the kicker is, it’s also awesome. Five songs of driving emotional hardcore, often in the vein of Amber Inn, is always going to get the juices flowing for a dork like me. Melquiades have a great blend of urgent male vocals (very similar to Amber Inn or Shotmaker) and female singing, a contrast that works well. Things change tack slightly with a “Oh City My City”” having a grooving Minutemen flavour. In fact the strong bass is a feature throughout the EP as it always is in this kind of emo – holding things together and pushing them onwards. Standout song is the stunning “”Cold”” a brooding Native Nod-esque number that burns steadily
