Raw Radar War - Deer Creek - split - LP (2007)

Labels: Game Two
Review by: Alex Deller

Palindromic knuckledraggers Raw Radar War crank out some enjoyable “” albeit rather standard “” craggy-edged doom, each lead-heavy thud languishing miserably in its own tarry filth while Jonah Jenkins (ex of Milligram and the ill-fated Miltown) ditches his usual hearty singing voice and gargles with a throatful of shite. Over on the flip Deer Creek are up to something mighty strange, coming across like a standard rock n’ roll act who’ve been detuned to the point of oblivion and forced to act out all their riffs in gloopy slow motion. Whether this is a warped attempt at gunning for something different or simply the result of a disastrous mastering fuckup is anyone’s guess, but what’s for sure is that the four tracks on offer (St Vitus / Pentagram homage and all) just don’t sit quite right, with hollow riffs, lifeless drums and gasping vocals that lag a few RPMs behind everything else all serving to annoy eminently more than they ever engage.
