Labels: Better Weird than Dead
Review by: Jo Edwards
Naomi Hates Humans is a somewhat refreshing change to the female singer-songwriter genre that seems to be very popular at the moment. Naomi is the real deal, not purely being picked up by a label from drama school, but rather akin to someone like Tim Holehouse (fellow friend and one time collaborator) as she was in Morbo Hates Humans and served time that way.
The album is basic, in regards the amount of instruments used. The drumming has a marching band feel to it at times especially on ‘Consensus Counts for Nothing’. Lyrically, the song that stands out the most to me is the anti love song ‘This is Not a Love Song’ although in some cases it turns out to be quite a twisted song about love. Gravelly vocals are very prominent on this album and tends to ruin ‘Pipe Dreams and Lullabies’ for me, but overall this album showcases Naomi’s talents and that she’ll keep going for many years to come!
