One For Jude - Regeneration - CD (2007)

Labels: self released
Review by: Gareth L

It’s taken me quite a while to review this album which is probably due to the kind of mediocre nature of the music within. This French lot have been reviewed here before and I always enjoy looking back at old reviews and wondering if they, or anyone associated with them, ever read them. Previously cheerfully described as ‘watery asexual goth pop’, One For Jude bring us a new album complete with amusing PR release which tells me which tracks are ‘anxious rock songs’ and which are the ‘atmospheric ballads’.

But I shouldn’t be too negative, I didn’t really mind a lot of this CD and it is a bit of a grower. It is better than the vast majority of the stuff on the radio and I actually really like a couple of the songs, not least because of the often great French slightly distorted vocals. When they go dark and electronic and miserable it sounds very pleasing to my ears, such as ‘Paul A’ and ‘Coeur Vegetal (Russe)’. Songs that are led by the guitar are less successful and the album does drag a little bit, often descending into almost chamber music at times. Overall though a decent effort, certainly better than I was expecting but quite hit and miss.
