Make Believe kick off the record in fantastic fashion with the amazing ‘ooo yum’. Quirky guitar lines, off kilter drumming and urgent yelps plague the song in the best possible way. This really sets the standard for the rest of the album. As always rhythm is also a big part of the sound and this is typified on ‘wearin torn’. Fractured drums splinter away under some toe tappingly groovy guitar playing and infuse together in a most spectacular of ways.
Due to the general urgency and intensity on display here I would say it reminds most of Joan Of Arc out of all previous Kinsella concoctions. Not to say this is JOA mk II but it’s definitely down the same road. At 16 tracks, whilst not all them new to this record, you may be forgiven for thinking it might drag on at some point. This is never the case. The album twists and turns to keep it interesting throughout. New sounds are constantly popping up all over the place, so much so that you’ll probably need a few listens to digest everything that’s going on. Not to say that it ever sounds crowded because it doesn’t.
Chirpy. Inventive. Weird. Melodic. Emotional. Catchy. Individual. Eclectic. Happy. All these things describe ‘going to the bone church’. Typically Kinsella, typically good and typically worth purchasing.
