WHOMP! It’s not every day that I get over-excited about a new band that is playing hyper-energetic hardcore. With emo elements. But Timber bring precisely that to the table on this mighty 5 song single. Things pile drive out of the gates with the blistering “Beginning”, a free-wheeling blast of hoarse, yelled (but not screamo) vocals, and melodic, pacey guitars. This pitches it somewhere between the likes of Four Hundred Years and Drive Like Jehu, and if you are anything like me, that is going to have your emo-sense tingling. That sets the pattern for the record, a muddy mess of boys yelling over distorted guitars that spiral around each other in the mix. It’s the kind of hardcore that I can get excited about, and to be honest you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of hardcore records that come out in a year that a comparable (Brito? Benard? I’m stuck now). On the flip you get a couple more ragers, and a shorter, melodic number that’s completely different. Final track “Thorn City” finally triggers who they remind me of the most – the South. All rumbles and yells, with hints of a tune in there somewhere, you just have to root around a bit.
Excellent seven! Read the lyrics too, it’s worth it.
