the Rivers of Sound - A New Good Feeling - CD (2008)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is a slice of thinly produced indie rock, clearly made with a love of the early 80s. Their myspace page gives the game away in the influences section, just in case you can’t work it out for yourself from the guitar sound or the vocals. Nothing is too punchy or in your face, the guitars chime in an inoffensive fashion, the singing is quite strong, whilst the songs are of fairly straightforward structure, nothing out of the ordinary or unpredictable. They do ratchet things up at times though, things get a fair bit noisier towards the end of the titular opening track. I think the best comparison I can come up with, is a lightweight Adorable. To be honest, this EP doesn’t really grab me ears and get me excited, but it isn’t one of those things we get sent that drives me into a blind rage either. I think if you have a thing for old fashioned English indie, the kind of thing the NME might have gotten a bit excited by when it actually gave a shit about music, then this will be right up your street. They’ve done a good job with the style, it’s just not the kind of thing I get the urge to listen to that often.
