Labels: awkward core
Review by: Graeme Cunningham
Some things sound like a good idea at the time. Then when you actually try to put the idea into practice, you end up with a massive heap of disappointment. I suspect that’s the case with the Whiskers. There’s some sort of vaguely steam punk-esque theme to this record (apparently) revolving around some chap called George who is the titular Distorted Historian. I presume this means the lyrics are bizarre, if far fetched historical revisions. I say “presume” as there is no lyric sheet. Schoolboy error chaps. Particularly when you go on to make a racket a bit like that Animal Collective lot, that renders whatever those lyrics might be completely unintelligible.
Musically, well, like I say; a bit like Animal Collective, or perhaps Arcade Fire, albeit an Animal Collective who’ve never all been in a room together at one time (which is the case for The Whiskers). Next time, I recommend getting together for a jam before you record the album. Then it all might be slightly less annoying.
