Mynas - Retreat - CD (2009)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Hmm. I reviewed these guys not so long ago and was conservatively positive, so they’ve sent us another 3 track EP. Again, I am not going to declare this to be the best thing ever, but it is perfectly inoffensive indie pop. The title track sounds like the Housemartins to me, and features lyrics written by a stalker, with lines such as “I read your profile daily”, the kind of thing I am sure you can relate to. The second track is absolutely terrible though. Wow. I can’t really describe it, and I am about to skip it. They finish on a better note with “Masons”, with a nice intro and plenty of well judged guitar jangles, venturing back into territory that is most easily described as if the Wedding Present were a bit middle of the road. Except from the last two albums they are anyway these days, so there you go. Not that this is a bad thing, it’s just… how often am I going to slip on a bit of nice but ultimately unspectacular indie pop? Pretty rarely, although I was fine with it for the purposes of this review. Maybe you go for that thing, and if you do, I reckon you’ll enjoy Mynas, apart from that horrendous track 2.
