Medusa - En Raga Sul - CD (2008)

Labels: Hawthorne Street – Monotonstudio
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Truth be told, I should have sent this to Deller or Kunal for review, as it is way too out of my tiny little mind’s sphere of musical knowledge, but I liked it too much. Plus I easily have the longest hair. Medusa is three folk from Racebannon plus two others, playing gnarly rock and roll / heavy metal. With lots of squawking. The guitars are a hostile mix of bludgeon and miserable slowness and occasional blitzkrieg. A number of the songs are interspersed with what I assume are samples of old horror films. Women screaming and such like. Where Medusa really score is that they have a maniac on vocals. Wild, unhinged wailing and yelping is the order of the day, if you are familiar with the ‘bannon then you will be more than ready for it, as it’s in the same ballpark. There are a few tracks which offer some pretense at sanity, for example “Bruiser” actually sounds like a proper song for a bit, until they start laying the bigger riffs down. And if you enjoy the kind of riffs that this kind of band has a propensity for (YOU KNOW THE ONES I MEAN, THE ONES PROBABLY ASSOCIATED WITH DOING PLENTY AND PLENTY OF DRUGS), then Medusa will make you wee. There are some great fast bits too, you could break your neck listening to “Throne of God”. Off to the races!

I’m afraid I can’t really point you in the right direction when it comes to something similar, but if you are the kind of bastard that likes the stuff that Kunal and Deller like, then you will like this as well. I hope. This is the least weak LP I have heard in a thousand jahre, and having made it to the end intact I believe I am capable of slaying a beholder with my bare hands. COME GET SOME.
