Teenage Cool Kids - Speaking in Tongues - 7

Labels: Copper Lung
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Not quite sure how we never got round to reviewing this band before, but they are now HOT HOT HOT SUPER POPULAR OMG! Well, maybe not but they have gone down quite well with many of the residents of the Collective Zine forums and are soon to tour the UK with multiple orgasm inducers, Algernon Cadwallader. This 7″ showcases two very different songs. “Speaking in Tongues” kicks things off in a lovely fashion, it’s a delightfully repetitious indie pop rocker, straight out of the top drawer of the filing cabinet marked “HITS!”. Look, it’s indie rock, it sounds like all of these: Built to Spill, the Wrens, the Shins, but in a super sweet way. The vocals are all a bit like they got kicked in the nads, and the dual guitar rolls in a glorious tandem for pretty much the duration of the song. It actually goes a bit post rock towards the end, which caught me off guard. The b-side, “Crucial Talk”, spins off in a remarkably different direction, all lo-fi garage pop plonkings and whistling. What the fuck? Whistling. What you have here is some ultra slack Beach Boysian laziness, oozing sunshine and being off your tits on whatever floats your boat. This tune is a grower and then some.
