Harpoon - Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide - CD (2009)

Labels: Interloper
Review by: Alex Deller

Twelve tracks of drummachine-assisted grind / metal here from a band featuring folks who’ve been around the block with the likes of 7000 Dying Rats and Lair Of The Minotaur. After the relatively epic opening track (weighing in at an unexpected five minutes and thirty-five seconds) it’s all pretty brisk business – thrash-tinged riffing, bestial roars and hummingbird-heartbeat drum programming that could conceivably be construed as genre progenitors Agoraphobic Nosebleed toning things down for a handful of Puppets-era Metallica covers. It’s not quite as special as that might sound, mind, and the occasional squelchiness of the guitars detracts from the overall brutality of it all, but overall “Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide” is an enjoyable enough opening salvo from a band that should be worth keeping an eye on in the future.
