Labels: crashlanding records – disillusioned records
Review by: Joe Callaghan
I don’t like change. The first full length was enjoyable, as enjoyable as 4 chord gruff punk can be. Melodies akin to Small Brown Bike and all the other bands that copy off each other so much they don’t even know who they are copying off anymore. Their latest 7″ takes a step away from that and focuses on a more riff-laden, garage rock sound. The melodies are more driving and flat, and the bars are interspersed with Jon Spencer styled guitar noodling. It just doesn’t engage me as much. The vocals aren’t distinctive enough to carry this type of flat melody. It seems to be confined to a very small space and never once tries to go beyond that. Quite a step backwards in terms of writing good, catchy numbers, but also a step forward, clearly showing signs of ambition and progress. Within another 7″ or two, they could nail the sound they are striving for, but as it stands right now, they fall just short and are in the shadow of a number of bands old and new who have managed to do this sound with a lot more justice and conviction.
