Stolen Hearts - Heart Detector - 7

Definitely an awesome thing is hearing a new bit of music that really doesn’t fit in with what you listen to, and you end up liking it an awful lot. Stolen Hearts on the a-side of this seven inch play some absurdly poppy music that is carried off by magnificent vocals into the land of Phil Spector and 60s whateveritwas. Such a simple track, a bunch of hand claps and more catchiness than should be allowed in one song. Given how good this song is, I wonder if this band is doomed as a singles group, I can’t see how they’d carry this thing off over the course of an entire LP. Over on the flip we get “Fire” which bounces off in a much more predictable manner, somewhere between the Ramones and Busy Signals. Certainly not a bad thing, but woah shit you are getting back to “Heart Collector” in a hurry. Things wind up on a cover of a song by some band I have unsurprisingly never heard of (“The Sponsors”), which also lives in that ballpark. It’s a solid sound, but again… you’re going back to that astonishing a-side.
